Superintendent's Residence

Also known as the Forestry Farm House

This building is a substantial two-and-a-half-storey red brick farmhouse, with two hipped dormers in the roof.  Built in 1913, this atypical prairie four square house served as the residence of the superintendents and his family, the superintendent's office and when the need arose, a reception centre for dignitaries. A four square contained four areas on the main floor: entrance, kitchen, front room and dining room arranged in a square. The bedrooms and bathroom were upstairs.

The house provided a home for the superintendents of the Sutherland Forest Nursery Station and their families; James McLean from 1914 to 1942 and Les Kerr from 1942 to 1966. 

The house gave the Dominion of Canada a stately presence in Western Canada, where important visitors such as Lord an Lady Byng came for tea and admired the beautiful grounds.
